What Is 4G?
4G, or 4th Generation, refers to cellular wireless standards. 4G is set to replace its predecessor, 3G. 4G is very new, just starting to appear in 2009. As of this printing, because it is so new, there is no agreed industry standard for what constitutes 4G mobile. For now, the standards are being shaped as goals for 4G.
Two major players are leading the move to 4G, Sprint and Verizon. It will not be long before other cellular and wireless providers join the pack. For the most part, 4G should be considered in a testing phase, with major availability by 2012.
You probably have started to see advertising on television and in print related to 4G, including the ever popular Apple iPod touch available in a variety of configurations as we speak.
A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as IP telephony, ultra-broadband Internet access, gaming services, and streamed multimedia may be provided to users.
Unlike the previous generations, 4G will be widely used for internet access on computers as well as carrying cellular communications. Customers in areas which have strong 4G coverage will be able to use it for their wireless home broadband connection. It can also be used for internet access when on the move without requiring a wireless hotspot.
